Bright Data: the most capable, and the most complicated

Formerly Luminati, Bright Data is the biggest company in this industry and has the broadest product line by a wide margin. It also has the steepest learning curve, the strictest customer screening and the least predictable invoice. All three of those facts matter more than the per-gigabyte rate.

The screening, described plainly

Bright Data verifies who its customers are. In practice that means company details, a description of what you plan to do, and for some products the specific sites you intend to touch. Certain use cases and certain countries are declined outright. Their compliance team is not a formality — it is a functioning gate.

This is defensible: the platform is powerful enough that unrestricted access would be a liability. It is also, empirically, where most individual buyers stop. If you are one person with a scraper and a card, you are not the profile the funnel is built for.

Where the cost actually comes from

People compare the base residential rate, sign up, and get a bill that does not resemble their estimate. The reason is that the base rate is one line among several. Premium pool access, managed unblocking, per-endpoint fees and add-on products each carry their own price, and a realistic configuration touches more than one of them.

None of that is hidden — it is documented, and their calculator is accurate if you feed it accurate assumptions. The failure is in the estimating, and the fix is to model the configuration you will actually run rather than the cheapest line on the pricing page.

Before you commit: write down your expected monthly gigabytes, the products you will enable, and the number of concurrent sessions. Price that. Comparing headline per-GB rates across vendors with different billing models tells you almost nothing.

What genuinely has no cheap substitute

It is worth being fair about this. Web Unlocker and the managed scraping products solve a real problem — sites that actively fight automation — and they solve it better than rolling your own. If your bottleneck is challenge pages and block rates rather than IP supply, cheaper proxies will not help you. You will just fail more cheaply.

Pick by which problem you have

If your problem is “the target site defeats me”, you want managed unblocking, and Bright Data is a legitimate answer. If your problem is “I need real residential IPs in a specific country, cheaply, today, without a sales conversation”, the platform is enormous overhead for a simple requirement.

Most people searching this brand turn out to have the second problem. They arrive because Bright Data is the name they have heard of, not because they need a data platform.

Bright Data FAQ

Is Bright Data legit?

Yes. It is the largest company in the proxy industry, formerly known as Luminati, publicly scrutinised and heavily lawyered. Legitimacy is not the concern with Bright Data; complexity and cost predictability are.

Why does Bright Data ask for KYC?

Because it sells tooling powerful enough that it screens who uses it. Expect to state your company, your use case and sometimes the specific domains you intend to target. Certain categories and geographies get refused. This is deliberate policy, not a bug, and it is the most common reason people abandon signup.

Is Bright Data expensive?

The headline per-gigabyte rate is mid-tier for the industry. The bills that surprise people come from the layers on top — premium features, add-ons and per-endpoint charges that stack. Model your real usage against their calculator before committing, not the base rate.

What is the difference between Bright Data proxies and Web Unlocker?

Proxies give you an address and leave the hard parts to you. Web Unlocker is a managed service that handles blocks, challenges and retries and charges per successful request. If your problem is a site that fights back, the second is what you are actually shopping for — and very little else on the market matches it.

What is a simpler alternative to Bright Data?

If you need plain residential or mobile IPs with credentials you paste somewhere, almost anything is simpler, including reseller access at a fraction of the cost. If you need Web Unlocker-class unblocking, be honest that you are looking at a short list and Bright Data is on it.
